Ancillary texts- Magazine article (final)

as you can see I have now added white text against a black background and used colours, similar to those used in Empire magazine (blue and orange) I have added page numbers to make it look authentic and a qoutation in bold to stand out.The black and white assimilaes the Twilight article whilst the colours are generic of many of the other articles in Empire..

Main task- Magazine article

This is a basic template from where I will begin, the article will be much like the 'Twilight' one shown in the research below. As you can see I plan to include pictures as well as writing and titles.

I plan to write in white writing against a black background for effect and to assimilate the 'Twilight' one from Empire Magazine. I couldn't choose between these two images to have in the background.

As you can see I have chosen this one, as I found many articles show the actors entire body, also I find the dynamics interesting and the way she is looking. I also think it's more thriller like as she is supposed to be holding a gun.

As you can see I have added star ratings similar to the rankings shown in Empire magazine.
I have taken a picture of this being shown in the actual magazine below.

I have changed the stars to all black to make the appearence neater. I have also copied the box which is used in Empire magazine inlcuding, plot, running time etc...

Main task- final poster

Analysis- I chose this reflection as the others looked insigificant from far away where as this one still resesmbles a face and looks far more effective as it fills the pupil. I also feel that not seeing the character fully shows a darker side to the character and is conventional to a thriller as many of the characters seen in thrillers have a 'dark side'. In the editing process, I brightened the eye to make the reflection more obvious and perfected some of the stray eyelashes, I feel this gives the poster a more professional look. The writing suggests the 'spy/assasin' genre and is multi layered again to suggest the characters personality. The credits at the bottom are also to make it look professional and to provide additional information. The actual eye is my characters and so is the character inside the eye, this shows a deeper meaning and hopefully intrigues that audience as they question who she is looking at.

Post production- music choices

I chose this song for my beginning sequence as the beat is constant and helps build tension.

And I chose this song for the sequence in the main location, as it fits with the genre of thriller and again builds tension and excitement.

post production- diary entry (editing)

The editing process is almost finished now. I still have these things left to do;
Cut down music and make it quieter in places
Colourise where neccessary
Opening/ending credits
Dub over one line

Main task- Research- Magazine article

One of the other options as part of the coursework is a magazine review/article, I am interested in this aspect of the course as journalism is a hopeful future career. So today I mapped out brief ideas about how mine might look after studying various other magazine articles in Empire magazie....

The 1st picture includes information about how the front cover, general lay out and lay out of the magazine article will look like, including brief examples. The 2nd is a very brief drawing of how I might lay my magazine article and front cover out.

I have analysed some articles which review films.

I plan to do mine in the style of the Twilight article with the picture being large and the writing being on top of the actual picture.

Main task- Pictures for Poster

I have based much of my poster idea on the Salt poster as I like the simple factor and the use of shadows.
So here are some of the photos I took yesterday of my main actress using the light for shadow effect.

 1....
Here is an example of one I have edited. I have cropped the photo so the focus is purely on the eye.
I have also brightened the eye and fixed blemishes.
I added mascara to give a more dramatic effect on the lashes.

 2....
I hope to reflect something relevant in the actual eye,
such as a target or possibly smaller versions of the other pictures I took although
I am not sure that would work.
3....  I have edited this further, brightening the eye and removing stray
eyelashes.

I have also edited these two pictures. Mainly fixing
blemishes that became obvious in the bright
light.

I have also made the general saturation
warmer and again added mascara for
a more dramatic effect.

Here are some more I haven't yet edited...

First Draft- unfinished introduction

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNxOaaYv6jo

This video is an unfinished introduction. It still has to be cut, dubbed and needs diegetic sound added. This is for presentational purposes so the quality isn't perfect.

Main task character representation

How is my character being represented in terms of gender representations?
My character Lily Turner is a young woman who's occupation is dangerous but ambiguous. However at the beginning we are unaware of this, therefore the representation of gender changes throughout...
For example, in terms of Propp's theory we may view my character as the 'damsel' who needs to be saved by the hero, which is the general appearence at the beginning. She goes for a run and is captured by a man, I think that the physical appearence of the characters emphasises the idea of 'innocent, vulnerable woman' and 'strong, evil man'. Her language reflects this, for example she says "i'll tell you/give you anything for you to let me go." (which is a fake plea.) The audience are unaware of her ability to know where her partner is and the fact she knows that everything is going to be fine.
Do you display a 'typical' view of female representation?
This 'innocence' idea is obvious up until the end where it is revelealed that Lily and her partner in crime (who is also a woman) had planned to get the man in a certain, isolated place in order to kill him. I think that in many ways, my film defeats ideas of 'typical' gender representations in terms of a main female actress. Yes she is captured and ultimately saved, however courage is demonstrated as she goes through being captured and nearly killed in order to be a kind of 'bait' in the process.
There is a typical switch in power towards the end where Lily says' I dont need any weapons' and the man becomes panicked. This shows another side to her where she is absoloutely in control, demonstrating an indepth and multi layered character who is far from one dimensional. This is necessary in a thriller as 'simple' characters merely do not exist within them. I think over all the character Lily represents a positive female representation (despite being cold over a killing, although it is justifiable as he was willing to kill her) over a small amount of time. There is also another female who shoots the interrogating man from afar representing a strong character and an almost 'girl power' element. Another point is the fact that only the women are seen holding weapons in the film, which defeats many of the expectations also, as men are usually seen with guns.

Main task- Filming day- pictures

Today I filmed, here are some of the pictures. Some of the difficulties were that it was cold and windy, which meant the sound will not be as good qaulity as I had hoped, so dubbing may be required.
However I got the footage I need, although I may have to re film one scene, although this will not affect the continuity as it is an extreme close up..

Main task- Actor Information

This is my female lead Philipa Ball. She is a student at the sixth form and is playing the character Lily. She is about 5ft 3in has brunette hair and is a petite build. She suits my character and the role, as she seems vulnerable enough to be captured and the fact she is in control of the situation throughout will suprise the audience, hopefully. After seeing her act previously in another students film I asked her and read through the script and she was happy with it.

My male lead is another student, Harry Alexander. He is approximately 6ft 2in, which, opposingly, makes him look much stronger and more frightening, however he is the vulnerable one at the end. He is also brunette. Harry has done acting as an enrichment course at our college and has previously acted in student films, so after running through the ideas and script he was happy to take part.

Pre Production- Location pictures

As my character is captured, an unknown and isolated place is where she would be taken. So I chose a run down shack in a field to give the isolation element.

My location is shown in my teaser poster
